Countdown to the Awards Ceremony

SRI LANKA TOURISM AWARDS

The formal tourism industry in Sri Lanka began with the enactment of  Ceylon Tourist Board act, No. 01 of 1966.

Since then, tourism in Sri Lanka showed a steady progress up to 1983. However, 30 years of civil war which seriously crippled our country has its devastating effect on tourism as well, resulting in a sharp decline in the industry.

2009 marked the end of the conflict reviving the hopes of the nation about a prosperous future. Since then the economy revival of the country has gathered pace and tourism industry too has shown a parallel development. The tourism industry in Sri Lanka has seen a continuous growth in recent years with 19% year-on-year to 146,828 million in June of 2017, following a 6.2 percent rise in the previous month which symbolizes the growth of the industry. Additionally, the increase in accommodation and value-added services in tourism are contributing to the growth of the industry. It is the monumental efforts of the industry that have paved the way for such success.
